Jesus
shows his disciples what it truly means to be God in the flesh. He shows them
what their all-powerful God is all about – servanthood. God himself, in Jesus,
doesn’t see the task of washing your nasty feet as a task that is beneath him.
He loves you. And he calls you to be like him. Think about that as you read these passages.

The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the entire
assembly of Israel and say
to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.
“‘Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.
“‘Do not turn to idols or make metal gods for yourselves. I am the Lord your God.
“‘When you sacrifice a fellowship offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a
way that it will be accepted on your behalf. It shall be eaten on the
day you sacrifice it or on the next day; anything left over until the third day
must be burned up. If any of it is eaten on the third day, it is impure and will not
be accepted. Whoever eats it will be held responsible because they have
desecrated what is holy to the Lord; they must be cut off
from their people.
“‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very
edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your
vineyard a second time or pick
up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.
“‘Do not steal.
“‘Do
not lie.
“‘Do
not deceive one another.
“‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.
“‘Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.
“‘Do
not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.
“‘Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the
blind, but fear your God. I am the Lord.
“‘Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.
“‘Do not go about spreading slander among your people.
“‘Do
not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord.
“‘Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.
“‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
“‘Keep my decrees.
“‘Do
not mate different kinds of animals.
“‘Do
not plant your field with two kinds of seed.
“‘Do
not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
Leviticus
19:1-19
From
the Former Prophets
After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all
his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I
am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go
ahead and do it, for the Lord is
with you.”
But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to
build me a house to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I
brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving
from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. Wherever I have moved
with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I
commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of
cedar?”’
“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from
the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my
people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I
have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name
great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a
place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a
home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not
oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever
since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give
you rest from all your enemies.
“‘The Lord declares to
you that the Lord himself
will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with
your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh
and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build
a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom
forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does
wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings
inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as
I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house
and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be
established forever.’”
Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
“Who am I, Sovereign Lord,
and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this
were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord,
you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this
decree, Sovereign Lord,
is for a mere human!
“What more can David say to you? For you know your
servant, Sovereign Lord. For
the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great
thing and made it known to your servant.
“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and
there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who
is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem
as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform
great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from
before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You have established
your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.
“And now, Lord God,
keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his
house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever.
Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty
is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in
your sight.
“Lord Almighty,
God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a
house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is
trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now
be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in
your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord,
have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be
blessed forever.”

Samuel 7:1-29
From
the Latter Prophets
See, my servant will act wisely;
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
Just as there were many who were appalled at him—
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness—
so he will sprinkle many nations,
and kings will shut their mouths because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand.
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,

52:13-53:12
From
the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
Blessed are those
who have regard for the weak;
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.
The Lord protects and preserves them—
they are counted among the blessed in the land—
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.
The Lord protects and preserves them—
they are counted among the blessed in the land—
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
I said, “Have mercy on me, Lord;
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?”
When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then he goes out and spreads it around.
“When will he die and his name perish?”
When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then he goes out and spreads it around.
All my enemies whisper together against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
“A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up from the place where he lies.”
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
“A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up from the place where he lies.”
Even my close friend,
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned against me.
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned against me.
But may you have mercy on me, Lord;
raise me up, that I may repay them.
I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does not triumph over me.
Because of my integrity you uphold me
and set me in your presence forever.
raise me up, that I may repay them.
I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does not triumph over me.
Because of my integrity you uphold me
and set me in your presence forever.
Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

41:1-13
From
the Late Books
I also saw under the sun
this example of wisdom that
greatly impressed me: There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a
powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against
it. Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the
city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor
man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.
The quiet words of the wise are
more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.
Ecclesiastes
9:13-18
From
the Gospels
It was
just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the
Father. Having loved his own who
were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already
prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the
Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the
meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured
water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped
around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to
wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do
not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus
answered, “Unless
I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands
and my head as well!”
Jesus answered, “Those
who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean.
And you are clean, though
not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was
clean.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and
returned to his place. “Do you
understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and
rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should
do as I have done for you. Very
truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be
blessed if you do them.
“I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
“I am
telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts
anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very
truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of
them he meant. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to
this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus answered, “It is
the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish.” Then,
dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. As soon as Judas took
the bread, Satan entered into him.
So
Jesus told him, “What you
are about to do, do quickly.” But no one at the meal
understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas had charge
of the money, some
thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had
taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
When he was gone, Jesus
said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God
is glorified in him. If God
is glorified in him, God will
glorify the Son in himself, and will
glorify him at once.
“My
children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and
just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
“A new
command I give you: Love one
another. As I have loved you, so
you must love one another. By this
everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus
replied, “Where I am going, you
cannot follow now, but you
will follow later.”
Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my
life for you.”
Then Jesus answered, “Will
you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster
crows, you will disown me three times!

13:1-38
From
the Epistles
Therefore
if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort
from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above
yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests
of the others.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as
Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
