Jesus says, “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because
her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of
her joy that a child is
born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you
again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” And he adds, “Until now you have not asked for anything in
my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will
be complete.” Think
about that as you read these passages.

Celebrate the Festival of
Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your
threshing floor and your winepress. Be
joyful at your festival—you, your sons and
daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the
fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. For
seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the
place the Lord will choose. For
the Lord your God will bless
you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.
Three
times a year all your men must appear before the Lord your God at the
place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of
Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles. No one should
appear before the Lord empty-handed: Each
of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has
blessed you.
Deuteronomy
16:13-17
From
the Former Prophets
When the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his
relationship to the Lord, she came to test
Solomon with hard questions. Arriving at Jerusalem with
a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and
precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had
on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for
the king to explain to her. When
the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the
food on his table, the seating of his
officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt
offerings he made at the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.
She
said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements
and your wisdom is true. But
I did not believe these things until
I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom
and wealth you have far
exceeded the report I heard. How
happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand
before you and hear your wisdom! Praise be to the Lord your God, who has
delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has
made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.”
And
she gave the king 120 talents of gold, large quantities of
spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as
those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
(Hiram’s
ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they
brought great cargoes of almugwood and precious stones. The
king used the almugwood to make supports for the temple of
the Lord and for the royal
palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has
never been imported or seen since that day.)
King
Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he
had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her
retinue to her own country.

A prayer of
Habakkuk the prophet. On shigionoth.
Lord, I have heard of your fame;
I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.
Repeat them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.
I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.
Repeat them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.
God
came from Teman,
the Holy One from Mount Paran.
His glory covered the heavens
and his praise filled the earth.
His splendor was like the sunrise;
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power was hidden.
the Holy One from Mount Paran.
His glory covered the heavens
and his praise filled the earth.
His splendor was like the sunrise;
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power was hidden.
Plague went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.
pestilence followed his steps.
He stood, and shook the earth;
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled
and the age-old hills collapsed—
but he marches on forever.
I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian in anguish.
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled
and the age-old hills collapsed—
but he marches on forever.
I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian in anguish.
Were
you angry with the rivers, Lord?
Was your wrath against the streams?
Was your wrath against the streams?
Did
you rage against the sea
when you rode your horses
and your chariots to victory?
You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.
when you rode your horses
and your chariots to victory?
You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.
You
split the earth with rivers;
the mountains saw you and writhed.
Torrents of water swept by;
the deep roared
and lifted its waves on high.
the mountains saw you and writhed.
Torrents of water swept by;
the deep roared
and lifted its waves on high.
Sun
and moon stood still in the heavens
at the glint of your flying arrows,
at the lightning of your flashing spear.
at the glint of your flying arrows,
at the lightning of your flashing spear.
In wrath you strode through the earth
and in anger you threshed the nations.
You came out to deliver your people,
to save your anointed one.
You crushed the leader of the land of wickedness,
you stripped him from head to foot.
and in anger you threshed the nations.
You came out to deliver your people,
to save your anointed one.
You crushed the leader of the land of wickedness,
you stripped him from head to foot.
With his own spear you pierced his head
when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,
gloating as though about to devour
the wretched who were in hiding.
when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,
gloating as though about to devour
the wretched who were in hiding.
You trampled the sea with your horses,
churning the great waters.
churning the great waters.
I
heard and my heart pounded,
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
and my legs trembled.
Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
and my legs trembled.
Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails

yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The
Sovereign Lord is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.

Habakkuk
3:1-19
From
the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
Of David.
Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me.
Take up shield and armor;
arise and come to my aid.
Brandish spear and javelin
against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
“I am your salvation.”
fight against those who fight against me.
Take up shield and armor;
arise and come to my aid.
Brandish spear and javelin
against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
“I am your salvation.”
May
those who seek my life
be disgraced and put to shame;
may those who plot my ruin
be turned back in dismay.
May they be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
be disgraced and put to shame;
may those who plot my ruin
be turned back in dismay.
May they be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
Since
they hid their net for me without cause
and without cause dug a pit for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
and without cause dug a pit for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord
and delight in his salvation.
My whole being will exclaim,
“Who is like you, Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
and delight in his salvation.
My whole being will exclaim,
“Who is like you, Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
Ruthless
witnesses come forward;
they question me on things I know nothing about.
They repay me evil for good
and leave me like one bereaved.
Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and humbled myself with fasting.
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
I went about mourning
as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
as though weeping for my mother.
But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
They slandered me without ceasing.
Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;
they gnashed their teeth at me.
they question me on things I know nothing about.
They repay me evil for good
and leave me like one bereaved.
Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and humbled myself with fasting.
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
I went about mourning

as though weeping for my mother.
But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
They slandered me without ceasing.
Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;
they gnashed their teeth at me.
How
long, Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life from these lions.
I will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among the throngs I will praise you.
Do not let those gloat over me
who are my enemies without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason
maliciously wink the eye.
They do not speak peaceably,
but devise false accusations
against those who live quietly in the land.
They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha!
With our own eyes we have seen it.”
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life from these lions.
I will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among the throngs I will praise you.

They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha!

Lord, you have seen this; do not be silent.
Do not be far from me, Lord.
Awake, and rise to my defense!
Contend for me, my God and Lord.
Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
do not let them gloat over me.
Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!”
or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
Do not be far from me, Lord.
Awake, and rise to my defense!
Contend for me, my God and Lord.
Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
do not let them gloat over me.
Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!”
or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
May
all who gloat over my distress
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
May those who delight in my vindication
shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
May those who delight in my vindication
shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
My
tongue will proclaim your righteousness,
your praises all day long.
your praises all day long.
Psalm
35:1-28
From
the Late Books
That day David
first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise to the Lord in this manner:
Give
praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always.
make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always.
Remember the wonders he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
He
remembers his covenant
forever,
the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham,
the oath he swore to Isaac.
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
“To you I will give the land of Canaan
as the portion you will inherit.”
the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham,
the oath he swore to Isaac.
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
“To you I will give the land of Canaan
as the portion you will inherit.”
When
they were but few in number,
few indeed, and strangers in it,
they wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
He allowed no one to oppress them;
for their sake he rebuked kings:
“Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm.”
few indeed, and strangers in it,
they wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
He allowed no one to oppress them;
for their sake he rebuked kings:
“Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm.”
Sing
to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
For
great is the Lord and most worthy of
praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.
Ascribe
to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
Tremble before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
Tremble before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
Let
the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
Let the trees of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
Let the trees of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
Give
thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;
gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.”
Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
his love endures forever.
Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;
gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.”
Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people
said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”
1
Chronicles 16:7-36
From
the Gospels
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it
hated me first. If you belonged to
the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the
world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the
world hates you. Remember what I told
you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted
me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my
teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you
this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who
sent me. If I had not come
and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but
now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me
hates my Father as well. If I had not done
among them the works no one else did, they would not be
guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet
they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to
fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me
without reason.’
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will
send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from
the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must
testify, for you have been with me from the
beginning.
“All this I have told you so
that you will not fall away. They will put you
out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when
anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such
things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you
this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you
about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me,
‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are
filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I
tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the
Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I
will send him to you. When he comes, he
will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and
judgment: about sin, because
people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going
to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment,
because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
“I have much more to
say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the
Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all
the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and
he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me
because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to
the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will
receive from me what he will make known to you.”
Jesus went on to
say, “In a little while you will see me no
more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
At
this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while
you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going
to the Father’?” They kept asking, “What
does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t
understand what he is saying.”
Jesus
saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one
another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more,
and then after a little while you will see me’?
Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world
rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth
to a child has pain because her time has come; but when
her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is
born into the world. So with you: Now is
your time of grief, but I will see you again and you
will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. In that day you will no longer
ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you
ask in my name. Until now you have
not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be
complete.
“Though I have been
speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no
longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will
ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the
Father on your behalf. No, the Father
himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed
that I came from God. I came from the
Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the
Father.”
Then
Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of
speech. Now
we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have
anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from
God.”
“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come
when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will
leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is
with me.
“I have told you
these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you
will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John
15:18-16:33
From
the Epistles
That which was from the
beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have
looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of
life. The life appeared; we have seen it and
testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the
Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and
heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our
fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
