Jesus says, “My prayer is not that you take them out of
the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly
sanctified.” Think about that as you read these passages.

From
the Torah
Then
the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I
will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive
them out of his country.”
God also said to Moses,
“I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to
Jacob as God Almighty, but by
my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as
foreigners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are
enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.
“Therefore, say to the
Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you
out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them,
and I will redeem you
with an outstretched arm and
with mighty acts of judgment. I will
take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under
the yoke of the Egyptians. And I
will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am
the Lord.’”
Moses reported this to
the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement
and harsh labor.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites
go out of his country.”
But Moses said to the Lord, “If
the Israelites will not listen to me,
why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?”
Exodus
6:1-12
From the Former Prophets
After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all
his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I
am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go
ahead and do it, for the Lord is
with you.”
But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to
build me a house to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I
brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving
from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. Wherever I have moved
with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I
commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a
house of cedar?”’
“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from
the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my
people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I
have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name
great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a
place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a
home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not
oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever
since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give
you rest from all your enemies.
“‘The Lord declares to
you that the Lord himself
will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you
rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you,
your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one
who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his
kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he
does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with
floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away
from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before
you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your
throne will be established forever.’”
Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
“Who am I, Sovereign Lord,
and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this
were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord,
you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this
decree, Sovereign Lord,
is for a mere human!
“What more can David say to you? For you know your
servant, Sovereign Lord. For
the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great
thing and made it known to your servant.
“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and
there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who
is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem
as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform
great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from
before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You have established
your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.
“And now, Lord God,
keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his
house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever.
Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty
is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be
established in your sight.
“Lord Almighty,
God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a
house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to
you. Sovereign Lord, you
are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good
things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant,
that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your
blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”
2
Samuel 7:1-29
From
the Latter Prophets
This is
the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was
the eighteenth year of
Nebuchadnezzar. The
army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the
prophet was confined in the
courtyard of the guard in the
royal palace of Judah.
Now Zedekiah king of
Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the
hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape the Babylonians but will certainly be given into the hands
of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with
his own eyes. He will
take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the Lord. If
you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”
Jeremiah said, “The word
of the Lord came to me: Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going
to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your
right and duty to buy
it.’
“Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in
the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.
Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’
“I knew that this was
the word of the Lord; so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and
weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver. I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales. I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy
containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my
cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews
sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
“In their presence I
gave Baruch these instructions: ‘This
is what the Lord Almighty,
the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of
purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses,
fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’
“After I had given the
deed of purchase to Baruch son of
Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:
“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have
made the heavens and the earth by your
great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’
sins into the laps of their
children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord Almighty, great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as
their deeds deserve. You
performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among
all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours. You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs
and wonders, by a mighty hand and an
outstretched arm and with
great terror. You gave
them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk
and honey. They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you
brought all this disaster on them.
“See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword,
famine and plague, the city
will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you
said has happened, as you now see. And though the city will be given into the hands of the
Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.’”
Then
the word of the Lord came to
Jeremiah: “I am
the Lord, the
God of all mankind. Is
anything too hard for me? Therefore
this is what the Lord says: I
am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it. The Babylonians who are attacking this city
will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by
burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to
other gods.
“The people of Israel
and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done
nothing but arouse my anger with
what their hands have made, declares
the Lord. From
the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I
must remove it from
my sight. The
people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done—they, their kings and
officials, their
priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen
or respond to discipline. They
set up their vile images in the
house that bears my Name and
defiled it. They built high places for Baal in the
Valley of Ben Hinnom to
sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek, though I never commanded—nor did
it enter my mind—that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin.
“You are saying about
this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king
of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the
God of Israel, says: I will
surely gather them
from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to
this place and let them live in safety. They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will
always fear me and
that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to
them, and I will inspire them to
fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and
soul.
“This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great
calamity on this people, so I
will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a
desolate waste, without people or
animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the
villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill
country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah
32:1-44
From
the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
A song of ascents. Of David.
How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!
when God’s people live together in unity!
It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
Psalm
133:1-3
From
the Late Books
“I, Daniel, was troubled
in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there
and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave
me the interpretation of
these things: ‘The
four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever
and ever.’
“Then I wanted to know
the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and
most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed
and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that
came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing
than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully. As I watched, this horn was waging war against
the holy people and defeating them, until the Ancient of Days came and
pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time
came when they possessed the kingdom.
“He gave me this
explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth.
It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole
earth, trampling it down and crushing it. The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this
kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones;
he will subdue three kings. He will
speak against the Most High and
oppress his holy people and try
to change the set times and the
laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and
half a time.
“‘But the court will
sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. Then the sovereignty, power and greatness
of all the kingdoms under
heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
“This is the end of the
matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Daniel
7:15-28
From
the Gospels
After
Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me
and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you
have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave
me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I
came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have
given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still
in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe
by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so
that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world
has hated them, for they are not of the world any
more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them
out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly
sanctified.
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will
believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe
that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that
you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to
complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before
the creation of the world.
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the
love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
John
17:1-26
From
the Epistles
Further,
my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write
the same things to you again, and it
is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the
flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast
in Christ Jesus, and who
put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reasons for such
confidence.
If someone else thinks
they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law,
a Pharisee; as for
zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
But whatever were gains
to me I now consider loss for the
sake of Christ. What is
more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have
lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a
righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his
resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his
death, and so, somehow,
attaining to the resurrection from
the dead.
Not that I have already
obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of
me. Brothers and sisters, I
do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining
toward what is ahead, I press
on toward the goal to win
the prize for
which God has called me
heavenward in Christ Jesus.
