Jesus was like us in that the devil would come to him when he
was hungry to tempt him. But Jesus tells the devil, “Man does not live in bread
alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Jesus also tells
his disciples, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to
finish his work.” Think about what that
means for you as you read these passages.

Be
careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the
land the Lord
promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these
forty years, to humble and test you in
order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his
commands. He
humbled you, causing you to
hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had
known, to teach you
that man does not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet
did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man
disciplines his son, so the Lord your
God disciplines you.
Observe the commands of
the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a
land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and
hills; a land with wheat and
barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and
honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack
nothing; a land where the rocks
are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
When you have eaten and
are satisfied, praise
the Lord your God for the good land he has given
you. Be careful that you do
not forget the Lord your
God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving
you this day. Otherwise,
when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large
and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you
will forget the Lord your
God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you
through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its
venomous snakes and
scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your
ancestors had never known, to
humble and test you so
that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”But
remember the Lord your
God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he
swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify
against you today that you will surely be destroyed. Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be
destroyed for not obeying the Lord your
God.
Deuteronomy 8:1-20
From
the Former Prophets
Then
Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
“There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.

She who was barren has borne seven children,

“The Lord brings death
and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts.
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.

“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.
on them he has set the world.
He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,

“It is not by strength that one prevails;
those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
1 Samuel 2:1-10
From the Latter Prophets
“Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.
For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves,
and you have not noticed?’
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion

For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,

Why have we humbled ourselves,

“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
and exploit all your workers.
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?

to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight
and the Lord’s holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,
then you will find your joy in the Lord,
and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land
and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.”

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Isaiah 58:1-14
From the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
Of David. When he pretended
to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.
I will extol the Lord at
all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the Lord;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.
his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the Lord;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and
he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.
and he delivers them.
Taste and see that the Lord is
good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.The lions may grow weak and hungry,
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are
on the righteous,
and his ears are attentive to their cry;
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to blot out their name from the earth.
and his ears are attentive to their cry;
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to blot out their name from the earth.
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
he delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the Lord delivers him from them all;
he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.
but the Lord delivers him from them all;
he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.
Evil will slay the wicked;
the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord will rescue his servants;
no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord will rescue his servants;
no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
Psalm 34:1-22
From the Late Books
Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
yet their appetite is never satisfied.
What advantage have the wise over fools?
yet their appetite is never satisfied.
What advantage have the wise over fools?
What do the poor gain
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
a chasing after the wind.
a chasing after the wind.
Whatever exists has already been named,
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?
Ecclesiastes
6:7-11
From
the Gospels
Just then his disciples
returned and were surprised to
find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why
are you talking with her?”
Then, leaving her water
jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I
ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their
way toward him.
Meanwhile his disciples
urged him, “Rabbi, eat
something.”
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
Then his disciples said
to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him
who sent me and to finish his work. Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I
tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even
now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the
saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. I sent
you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and
you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many of the Samaritans
from that town believed
in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they
urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became
believers.
They said to the woman,
“We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for
ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
John
4:27-42
From the Epistles
Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,
To
those who have been called, who are
loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:
Mercy,
peace and love be yours in
abundance.
Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you
about the salvation we share, I felt
compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s
holy people. For
certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among
you. They are ungodly people,
who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus
Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
Though you already know
all this, I want
to remind you that
the Lord at one time delivered
his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their
positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in
darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a
similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the
surrounding towns gave
themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of
those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
In the very same way, on
the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies,
reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings. But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about
the body of Moses, did not
himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Yet these people slander whatever they do
not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as
irrational animals do—will destroy them.
Woe to them! They have
taken the way of Cain; they
have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s
rebellion.
These people are
blemishes at your love feasts, eating
with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and
uprooted—twice dead. They
are wild waves of the sea, foaming
up their shame; wandering
stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about
them: “See, the Lord is coming with
thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of
them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of
all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own
evil desires; they
boast about themselves and
flatter others for their own advantage.
But, dear friends,
remember what the apostles of our
Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They
said to you, “In the last times there
will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who
follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.
But you, dear friends,
by building yourselves up in your
most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for
the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
Be merciful to those who
doubt; save others by snatching
them from the fire; to
others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by
corrupted flesh.
To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present
you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and
authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
Jude
1:1-15
