“Do you want to get well?” This is what Jesus asks the paralyzed
man at the Pool of Bethesda. Jesus is the restorer –
the healer of all things and people. He wants to make us well even when we don’t
know what our problem is. Do you want to get well? Think about that as
you read these passages.

Then Moses led Israel
from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert
without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because
it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against
Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit
to drink.
There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them
and put them to the test. He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes,
if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

Now
Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his
master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant
soldier, but he had leprosy.
Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken
captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her
mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his
leprosy.”
Naaman went to his
master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the
king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman
left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing. The letter that he took
to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to
you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
As soon as the king of
Israel read the letter, he tore
his robes and said, “Am I God? Can I
kill and bring back to life? Why
does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is
trying to pick a quarrel with
me!”
When Elisha the man of
God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message:
“Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that
there is a prophet in
Israel.”So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the
door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven
times in the Jordan, and your
flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
But Naaman went away
angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and
call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. Are not Abana and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be
cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.
Naaman’s servants went
to him and said, “My father, if the
prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How
much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” So he went down and
dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his
flesh was restored and
became clean like that of a young boy.
Then Naaman and all his
attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, “Now I
know that there is no God in
all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
The prophet answered,
“As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a
thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.
“If you will not,” said
Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your
servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god
but the Lord. But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing:
When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow there also—when
I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”
“Go in peace,” Elisha said.
After Naaman had traveled some distance, Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this
Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord lives, I will run after him and get
something from him.”
So Gehazi hurried after
Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to
meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.
“Everything is all
right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the
company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim.
Please give them a talent of
silver and two sets of clothing.’”
“By all means, take two
talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two
talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing.
He gave them to two
of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. When Gehazi came to the
hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He
sent the men away and they left.
When he went in and
stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”
“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi
answered.
But Elisha said to him,
“Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you?
Is this the time to take
money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds,
or male and female slaves? Naaman’s leprosy will
cling to you and to your descendants forever.”
Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and his skin
was leprous—it had become as white as snow.

I also learned that the
portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians
responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields. So I rebuked the
officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and stationed
them at their posts.
All Judah brought the
tithes of grain, new wine and
olive oil into the storerooms. I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named
Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of
Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were
made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
Remember me for
this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house
of my God and its services.
In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the
Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine,
grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into
Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore
I warned them against selling food on that day. People from Tyre who
lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and
selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. I rebuked the nobles of
Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating
the Sabbath day? Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought
all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against
Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”
When evening shadows
fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not
opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates
so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. Once or twice the
merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. But I warned them and
said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will
arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. Then I commanded the
Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the
Sabbath day holy.

Some
time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in
Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool,
which in Aramaic is
called Bethesda and
which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of
disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.

such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.]
One who
was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying
there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked
him, “Do you want to get
well?”
“Sir,” the invalid
replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.
While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Get up!
Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a
Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is
the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
But he replied, “The man
who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up
your mat and walk.’ ”
So they asked him, “Who
is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
The man who was healed
had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was
there.
Later Jesus found him at
the temple and said to him, “See,
you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and
told the Jewish leaders that it
was Jesus who had made him well.

In your struggle against
sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by
their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then
you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all
had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much
more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for
a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in
order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems
pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of
righteousness and peace for
those who have been trained by it.
Therefore, strengthen
your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for
your feet,” so that
the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
