Who is the Son of Man? He is fully God and fully
human. He represents humanity (adam) and he represents God. He is both humble
and powerful. He is both earthy and spiritual. And he is the only way to life.
Think about that as you read these passages.

And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars,
and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.” Balak did as Balaam
had said. And Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a
ram. And Balaam said to Balak, “Stand beside your burnt offering, and
I will go. Perhaps the Lord will
come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell you.” And he went to
a bare height, and God met Balaam. And Balaam said to him, “I have
arranged the seven altars and I have offered on each altar a bull and a
ram.” And the Lord put
a word in Balaam's mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall
speak.”And he returned to him, and behold, he and all the princes of Moab were
standing beside his burnt offering. And Balaam took up his discourse
and said,
“From Aram Balak has brought me,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
and come, denounce Israel!’
How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?
For from the top of the crags I see him,
from the hills I behold him;
behold, a people dwelling alone,
and not counting itself among the nations!
Who can count the dust of Jacob
or number the fourth part of Israel?
Let me die the death of the upright,
and let my end be like his!”
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
and come, denounce Israel!’
How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?
For from the top of the crags I see him,

And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took
you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.”And
he answered and said, “Must I not take care to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
And Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, from
which you may see them. You shall see only a fraction of them and shall not see
them all. Then curse them for me from there.” And he took him to the field
of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull
and a ram on each altar. Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside
your burnt offering, while I meet the Lord over
there.” And the Lord met
Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus
shall you speak.” And he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside
his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him,
“What has the Lord spoken?” And
Balaam took up his discourse and said,
“Rise, Balak, and hear;
give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Behold, I received a command to bless:
he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob,
nor has he seen trouble in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them,
and the shout of a king is among them.
God brings them out of Egypt
and is for them like the horns of the wild ox.
For there is no enchantment against Jacob,
no divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,
‘What has God wrought!’
Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up
and as a lion it lifts itself;
it does not lie down until it has devoured the prey
and drunk the blood of the slain.”
give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Behold, I received a command to bless:

And Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all, and do not
bless them at all.” But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell
you, ‘All that the Lord says,
that I must do’?” And Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take
you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me
from there.” So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which
overlooks the desert. And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me
here seven altars and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”And Balak
did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

From the Former Prophets
Then
Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
“There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.

He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,

“It is not by strength that one prevails;
those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
1 Samuel 2:1-10
From the Latter Prophets
And he
said to me, “Son of
man, stand on your feet, and
I will speak with you.” And as
he spoke to me, the
Spirit entered into me and set me
on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you
to the people of Israel, to nations
of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed
against me to this very day. The
descendants also are impudent
and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the
Lord God.’ And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for
they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been
among them. And
you, son of man, be not
afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and
you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be
dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for
they are a rebellious house.
“But you, son of man,
hear what I say to you. Be not
rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you.” And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. And he spread it before me. And it had
writing on the front and on the
back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe.
And he
said to me, “Son of
man, eat whatever you find here. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house
of Israel.” So I
opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your
belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it.” Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.
And he said to me, “Son of man, go to the house of Israel and
speak with my words to them. For you
are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the
house of Israel— not to
many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot
understand. Surely,
if I sent you to such, they would listen to you. But the house of Israel will not be willing
to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me: because all the
house of Israel have a
hard forehead and a stubborn heart. Behold, I have made your face as hard as
their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. Like emery harder than flint have I made your
forehead. Fear
them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.” Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you
receive in your heart, and hear with your ears. And go to the exiles, to your people, and speak to them and say
to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’whether
they hear or refuse to hear.”
Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the
voice of a great earthquake: “Blessed be the glory
of the Lord from its place!” It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures as they touched one
another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of a great earthquake. The Spirit lifted me up and took me away,
and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the Lord being strong upon me. And I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who
were dwelling by the
Chebar canal, and I sat where they were dwelling. And I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days.
Ezekiel 2:1-3:15
From the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.
O Lord, our
Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you
have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our
Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 8:1-9
From the Late Books
In the
first year of Belshazzar
king of Babylon, Daniel
saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down
the dream and told the sum of the matter. Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up
the great sea. And
four great beasts came up
out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles'
wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from
the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was
given to it. And
behold, another beast, a second
one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth
between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ After this I looked, and behold, another,
like a leopard, with four wings
of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and
behold, a fourth beast, terrifying
and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It
was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a
little one, before
which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in
this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
“As I looked,
thrones
were placed,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat;
his clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
its wheels were burning fire.
A stream of fire issued
and came out from before him;
a thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him;
the court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.
and the Ancient of Days took his seat;
his clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
its wheels were burning fire.
A stream of fire issued
and came out from before him;
a thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him;
the court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.
“I
looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking.
And as I looked, the
beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their
lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
“As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me. I approached one of those who stood there
and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me
the interpretation of the things. ‘These four great beasts are four kings who
shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the Most High shall receive
the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’
“Then I desired to know
the truth about the
fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying,
with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in
pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, and about the ten horns that were on its
head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the
horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater
than its companions. As I
looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them, until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the saints of the
Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom.
“Thus he said: ‘As for the fourth beast,
there
shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
and shall put down three kings.
He shall speak words against the Most High,
and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
and shall think to change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
for a time, times, and half a time.
and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
and shall put down three kings.
He shall speak words against the Most High,
and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
and shall think to change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
for a time, times, and half a time.
But the court shall sit in judgment,
and his dominion shall be taken away,
to be consumed and destroyed to the end.
And the kingdom and the dominion
and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High;
his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’
and his dominion shall be taken away,
to be consumed and destroyed to the end.
And the kingdom and the dominion
and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High;
his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’
“Here
is the end of the matter. As for
me, Daniel, my thoughts
greatly alarmed me, and my
color changed, but I kept
the matter in my heart.”
Daniel 7:1-28
From the Gospels
So, because Jesus was
doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is
always at his work to this
very day, and I too am working.” For this reason they tried all the more to
kill him; not
only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father,
making himself equal with God.
Jesus gave them this
answer: “Very truly I tell you,
the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the
Father does the Son also does. For the
Father loves the Son and
shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment
to the Son, that all
may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son
does not honor the Father, who sent him.
“Very truly I tell you,
whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will
not be judged but has
crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the
dead will hear the
voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son
also to have life in
himself. And he has given him
authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
“Do not be amazed at
this, for a time is coming when all
who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live,
and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
John 5:16-30
From
the Epistles/Revelation
The
revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to
his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who
reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who
keep what is written in it, for the
time is near.
John to the seven
churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace
from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his
throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who
pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
“I am the Alpha and the
Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is
and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
I, John, your brother
and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that
are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and
the testimony of Jesus. I was
in the Spirit on the
Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches,
to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to
Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”
Then I turned to see the
voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like
white wool, like snow. His
eyes were like a flame of fire, his
feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged
sword, and his
face was like the sun shining in full
strength.
When I saw him, I fell
at his feet as though dead. But he laid
his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the
first and the last, and the
living one. I died,
and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Write therefore the
things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place
after this. As for
the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the
seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
