When many of Jesus’ disciples
desert him and go their separate ways, Peter declares that there is no other
option for him other than to continue following Jesus. He says to Jesus, “Who
else would we follow? You’re the only one whose words bring life.” In that
moment, he recognizes Jesus for who he really is. Think about that as you read
these passages.

When
all these blessings and curses I have
set before you come on you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations, and when you and your children return to the Lord your
God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to
everything I command you today, then
the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he
scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant
land under the heavens, from
there the Lord your
God will gather you and
bring you back. He will
bring you to the land that
belonged to your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make
you more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors. The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and
the hearts of your descendants, so that
you may love him
with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. You will again obey the Lord and follow all his commands I am giving you
today. Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in
all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your
livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he
delighted in your ancestors, if you
obey the Lord
your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in
this Book of the Law and
turn to the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Now what I am commanding
you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to
ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may
obey it?” Nor is
it beyond the sea, so that
you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we
may obey it?” No, the
word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey
it.
See, I set before you
today life and
prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to
love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and
to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are
entering to possess.
But if your heart turns
away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other
gods and worship them, I
declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are
crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
This day I call the
heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death,
blessings and curses. Now
choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold
fast to him. For the Lord is your
life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob.
Deuteronomy
30:1-20
From
the Former Prophets
Again
the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the
Philistines for
forty years.
A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife
who was childless, unable
to give birth. The
angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless,
but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine or
other fermented drink and
that you do not eat anything unclean. You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a
razor because the boy is to be
a Nazirite, dedicated
to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the
Philistines.”
Then the woman went to
her husband and told him, “A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of
God, very awesome. I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he
didn’t tell me his name. But he
said to me, ‘You will become pregnant and have a son. Now then, drink no wine or
other fermented drink and do
not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
Then Manoah prayed to the Lord:
“Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how
to bring up the boy who is to be born.”
God heard Manoah, and
the angel of God came again to the woman while she was out in the field; but
her husband Manoah was not with her. The woman hurried to tell her husband,
“He’s here! The man who appeared to me the other day!”
Manoah got up and
followed his wife. When he came to the man, he said, “Are you the man who
talked to my wife?”
“I am,” he said.
So Manoah asked him,
“When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule that governs the boy’s
life and work?”
The angel of the Lord answered, “Your wife must do all that I
have told her. She
must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or
other fermented drink nor eat
anything unclean. She
must do everything I have commanded her.”
Manoah said to the angel
of the Lord, “We
would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat for you.”
The angel of the Lord replied, “Even though you detain me, I will
not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.” (Manoah did not
realize that it was the angel of
the Lord.)
Then Manoah inquired of
the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word
comes true?”
He replied, “Why do you
ask my name? It is
beyond understanding.”Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain
offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. And
the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his
wife watched: As the
flame blazed up from the altar
toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended
in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the
ground. When the angel of the Lord did not show himself again to Manoah and
his wife, Manoah realized that it
was the angel of the Lord.
“We are doomed to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen God!”
But his wife answered,
“If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have
accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all
these things or now told us this.”
The woman gave birth to
a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
Judges
13:1-25
From the
Latter Prophets
In that
day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city;
God makes salvation
its walls and ramparts.
Open the gates
that the righteous nation may enter,
the nation that keeps faith.
You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.
God makes salvation
its walls and ramparts.
Open the gates
that the righteous nation may enter,
the nation that keeps faith.
You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
He humbles those who dwell on high,
he lays the lofty city low;
he levels it to the ground
and casts it down to the dust.
Feet trample it down—
the feet of the oppressed,
the footsteps of the poor.
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
He humbles those who dwell on high,
he lays the lofty city low;
he levels it to the ground
and casts it down to the dust.
Feet trample it down—
the feet of the oppressed,
the footsteps of the poor.
The path of the righteous is level;
you, the Upright One, make the way of the righteous smooth.
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws,
we wait for you;
your name and renown
are the desire of our hearts.
My soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.
you, the Upright One, make the way of the righteous smooth.
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws,
we wait for you;
your name and renown
are the desire of our hearts.
My soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.
When your judgments come upon the earth,
the people of the world learn righteousness.
But when grace is shown to the wicked,
they do not learn righteousness;
even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil
and do not regard the majesty of the Lord.
Lord, your hand is lifted high,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame;
let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.
the people of the world learn righteousness.
But when grace is shown to the wicked,
they do not learn righteousness;
even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil
and do not regard the majesty of the Lord.
Lord, your hand is lifted high,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame;
let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.
Lord, you establish peace for us;
all that we have accomplished you have done for us.
Lord our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us,
but your name alone do we honor.
They are now dead, they live no more;
their spirits do not rise.
You punished them and brought them to ruin;
you wiped out all memory of them.
all that we have accomplished you have done for us.
Lord our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us,
but your name alone do we honor.
They are now dead, they live no more;
their spirits do not rise.
You punished them and brought them to ruin;
you wiped out all memory of them.
You have enlarged the nation, Lord;
you have enlarged the nation.
You have gained glory for yourself;
you have extended all the borders of the land.
you have enlarged the nation.
You have gained glory for yourself;
you have extended all the borders of the land.
Lord, they came to you in their distress;
when you disciplined them,
they could barely whisper a prayer.
As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pain,
so were we in your presence, Lord.
We were with child, we writhed in labor,
but we gave birth to wind.
We have not brought salvation to the earth,
and the people of the world have not come to life.
when you disciplined them,
they could barely whisper a prayer.
As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pain,
so were we in your presence, Lord.
We were with child, we writhed in labor,
but we gave birth to wind.
We have not brought salvation to the earth,
and the people of the world have not come to life.
But your dead will live, Lord;
their bodies will rise—
let those who dwell in the dust
wake up and shout for joy—
your dew is like the dew of the morning;
the earth will give birth to her dead.
their bodies will rise—
let those who dwell in the dust
wake up and shout for joy—
your dew is like the dew of the morning;
the earth will give birth to her dead.
Go, my people, enter your rooms
and shut the doors behind you;
hide yourselves for a little while
until his wrath has passed by.
See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling
to punish the people of the earth for their sins.
The earth will disclose the blood shed on it;
the earth will conceal its slain no longer.
and shut the doors behind you;
hide yourselves for a little while
until his wrath has passed by.
See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling
to punish the people of the earth for their sins.
The earth will disclose the blood shed on it;
the earth will conceal its slain no longer.
Isaiah
26:1-21
From
the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
Of David. A psalm.
The earth is the Lord’s, and
everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.
They will receive blessing from the Lord
and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.
and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
Psalm
24:1-10
From the
Late Books
All this happened to King
Nebuchadnezzar. Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the
royal palace of Babylon, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal
residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven,
“This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has
been taken from you. You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild
animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until
you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and
gives them to anyone he wishes.”
Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled.
He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the
feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.
At the end of that time, I,
Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored
and glorified him who lives forever.
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
All the peoples of the earth
are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases
with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand
or say to him: “What have you done?”
his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
All the peoples of the earth
are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases
with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand
or say to him: “What have you done?”
At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and
splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored
to my throne and became even greater than before. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and
exalt and glorify the King of
heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
Daniel
4:28-37
From
the Gospels
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat
the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no
life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life,
and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my
blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me,
and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because
of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is
the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but
whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” He said this while
teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard
teaching. Who can accept it?”
Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to
them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you see the Son of
Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the
flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the
Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not
believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did
not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I
told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no
longer followed him.
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the
Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You
have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that
you are the Holy One of God.”
Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve?
Yet one of you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon
Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
John
6:53-71
From
the Epistles
Are we
beginning to commend ourselves again?
Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on
our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ,
the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the
living God, not on
tablets of stone but on
tablets of human hearts.
Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our
competence comes from God. He has
made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills,
but the Spirit gives life.
Now if the ministry that
brought death, which
was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could
not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even
more glorious? If the
ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the
ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in
comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory,
how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
Therefore, since we have
such a hope, we are
very bold. We are
not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the
end of what was passing away. But
their minds were made dull, for to
this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in
Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers
their hearts. But
whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there
is freedom. And we
all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes
from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
