Jesus cried out,
“Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent
me! The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me! I have come into the
world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness!” Think about that as
you read these passages.

At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. This
is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to
a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own
people, because the Lord’s
time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. You may require payment from
a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. However,
there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess
as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey
the Lord your God and
are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today. For
the Lord your God will
bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow
from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.
If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the
towns of the land the Lord your
God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather,
be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. Be careful not
to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is
near,” so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow
Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be
found guilty of sin. Give generously to them and do so without a grudging
heart; then because of this the Lord your
God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand
to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command
you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in
your land.
If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you
and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. And
when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. Supply them
liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give
to them as the Lord your
God has blessed you. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That
is why I give you this command today.
But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because
he loves you and your family and is well off with you, then take an awl
and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant
for life. Do the same for your female servant.
Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because
their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a
hired hand. And the Lord your
God will bless you in everything you do.

From
the Former Prophets
These
are the last words of David:
“The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me;
his word was on my tongue.
The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’
his word was on my tongue.

‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,

on a cloudless morning,

that brings grass from the earth.’
“If my house were not right with
God,
surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,
arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant me my every desire.
But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,
which are not gathered with the hand.
Whoever touches thorns
uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are burned up where they lie.”

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,

I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword.
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword.
Then the Lord will appear over them;
his arrow will flash like lightning.
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;
he will march in the storms of the south,
and the Lord Almighty will shield them.
They will destroy
and overcome with slingstones.
They will drink and roar as with wine;
they will be full like a bowl
used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.
his arrow will flash like lightning.
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;
he will march in the storms of the south,

They will destroy
and overcome with slingstones.
They will drink and roar as with wine;
they will be full like a bowl

The Lord their God will save
his people on that day
as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.
How attractive and beautiful they will be!
Grain will make the young men thrive,
and new wine the young women.
as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.
How attractive and beautiful they will be!
Grain will make the young men thrive,

Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
You who are young, be happy while
you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.
So then, banish anxiety from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart

but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.
So then, banish anxiety from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.
Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;
when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home
and mourners go about the streets.
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light

Remember him—before the silver cord
is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes
11:7-12:7
From
the Gospels
Six
days before the Passover, Jesus
came to Bethany, where
Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given
in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while
Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a
pint of pure nard, an
expensive perfume; she
poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance
of the perfume.
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray
him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It
was worth a year’s wages.” He did not say this
because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the
money bag, he used
to help himself to what was put into it.
“Leave
her alone,” Jesus
replied. “It was intended that
she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and
came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from
the dead. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus
and believing in him.
The next day the great
crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to
Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
“Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
see, your king is coming,
seated on a donkey’s colt.”
see, your king is coming,
seated on a donkey’s colt.”
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been
written about him and that these things had been done to him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and
raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because
they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to
one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has
gone after him!”
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the
festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they
said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell
Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many
seeds. Anyone
who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this
world will keep it for
eternal life. Whoever
serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
“Now my
soul is troubled, and what
shall I say? ‘Father, save me
from this hour’? No, it
was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”
Then a
voice came from heaven, “I have
glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there
and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
Jesus said, “This
voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will
draw all people to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son
of Man must be lifted up’? Who
is this ‘Son of Man’?”
Then Jesus told them, “You are
going to have the light just a
little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not
know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the
light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left
and hid himself from them.
Even after Jesus had
performed so many signs in
their presence, they still would not believe in him. This was to fulfill the
word of Isaiah the prophet:
“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says
elsewhere:
“He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their
faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human
praise more than praise from
God.
Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever
believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one
who sent me. I have
come into the world as a light, so that
no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
“If
anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I
did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the
very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the
Father who sent me commanded me to say
all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal
life. So whatever I say is
just what the Father has told me to say.”
John
12:1-50
From
the Epistles
That
which was from the beginning, which
we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared
to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with
us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we
have heard from
him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have
fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the
light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies
us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not
in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive
us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not
sinned, we make him out to be a
liar and his word is not in
us.
My dear children, I write
this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an
advocate with the Father—Jesus
Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning
sacrifice for our sins, and not
only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar,
and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his
word, love for God is
truly made complete in them. This is
how we know we are
in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
Dear friends, I am
not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the
beginning. This
old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a
new command; its
truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their
brother and sister lives
in the light, and
there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a
brother or sister is in
the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going,
because the darkness has blinded them.
