Living on Mission and the Love of God

John 3:1-22

For me, the heart of this passage is John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Isn’t it comforting to know that God so loves the bright, shiny, perfect, and sinless world?

Hang on…. That’s not what it says.

These verses talk about perishing and condemnation as if that is where the world was headed. In fact, the passage continues by talking about how the people of this world prefer the darkness because of their evil deeds. Not very loveable, right?

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8)

His incredible love for us was bestowed while we were hiding from Him, were in a fallen state, had turned our backs on Him, preferring evil deeds, and our relationship with Him was broken by sin. Oh my goodness, that’s some kind of love! That love is life altering – it’s world changing.

Jesus calls us to love like He loves: deeply, unconditionally, and sacrificially. This is what drives us in mission – His love compels us.

Let’s practice Living on Mission and love this world, and the people of our city, with His love.
