Jesus tells Nicodemus, “The wind
blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it
comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” To
live as Christ is to live the Spirit-filled life. What does God’s Spirit living
in you look like? Think about that as you read the passages.

From the Torah
They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to
the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against
God and
against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the
wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this
miserable food!”
Then the Lord sent venomous
snakes among them; they bit the people and
many Israelites died. The people came to
Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke
against the Lord and against you.
Pray that the Lord will take the
snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
The Lord said to Moses,
“Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten
can look at it and live.” So Moses made a
bronze snake and put it up on a
pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake,
they lived.
Numbers 21:4-9
From the Former
Prophets
When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven
in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way
from Gilgal. Elijah said to
Elisha, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to
Bethel.”
But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you
live, I will not leave you.” So they went down
to Bethel.
The company of the prophets at
Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take
your master from you today?”
“Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so
be quiet.”
Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here,
Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”
And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you
live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.
The company of the prophets at
Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take
your master from you today?”
“Yes, I know,” he replied, “so be
quiet.”
Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the
Jordan.”
And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you
live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them
walked on.
Fifty men from the company of the
prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha
had stopped at the Jordan. Elijah took his
cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it.
The water divided to the right and to
the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
When they had crossed, Elijah said
to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
“Let me inherit a double portion of your
spirit,” Elisha replied.
“You have asked a difficult thing,”
Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be
yours—otherwise, it will not.”
As they were walking along and
talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire
appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and
cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of
Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two.
Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak
that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. He took the cloak that had fallen
from Elijah and struck the water with it.
“Where now is the Lord,
the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right
and to the left, and he crossed over.
The company of the prophets
from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah is
resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before
him. “Look,” they said, “we your servants
have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and set him down on
some mountain or in some valley.”
“No,” Elisha replied, “do not send
them.”
But they persisted until he was too
embarrassed to refuse. So he
said, “Send them.” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did
not find him. When they returned
to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not
to go?”

From the Latter
Prophets
“Come, all you who
are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.

Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,

Give ear and come to me;
listen, that you may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a ruler and commander of the peoples.
Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations you do not know will come running to you,
because of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.”
Seek the Lord while he may be
found;
call on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

The sayings of Agur son of
Jakeh—an inspired utterance.
This man’s
utterance to Ithiel:
“I am weary, God,
but I can prevail.
Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.
Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!
but I can prevail.
Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
“Every word of God
is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

“Two things I ask
of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.

Proverbs 30:1-9
From the Late Books
“In my vision at night I looked, and
there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of
heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days
and was led into his presence. He was given
authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language
worshiped him. His dominion is an
everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will
never be destroyed.
Daniel 7:13-14
From the Gospels
Now there was a
Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of
the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at
night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a
teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if
God were not with him.”
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell
you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
“How can someone be born when they
are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their
mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell
you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the
Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the
Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be
surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows
wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes
from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not
understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of
what we know, and we testify to what we have seen,
but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of
earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of
heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who
came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted
up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who
believes may have eternal life in him.”
John
3:1-15
From the Epistles
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by
all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated
and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our
Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his
mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out
on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having
been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy
saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have
trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are
excellent and profitable for everyone.
Titus 3:3-8
