“He must become greater,
I must become less.” This is what John the Baptizer tells his disciples when
they get jealous of the success of Jesus’ ministry. John realized that it wasn’t
about him – it was about Jesus. John sees himself as Jesus’ best man… and
weddings aren’t about the best man, they’re about the bride and groom. Think about
that as you read these passages.

So Moses went out and
told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of
their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy
elders. When the Spirit rested
on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.
However, two men, whose
names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among
the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told
Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my
lord, stop them!”
But Moses replied, “Are
you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s
people were prophets and
that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Then Moses and the
elders of Israel returned to the camp.

David stayed in the
wilderness strongholds
and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands.
While David was at
Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul had come out to take his life. And Saul’s son Jonathan
went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. “Don’t be afraid,” he
said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you.
Even my father Saul knows this.” The two of them made a
covenant before the Lord.
Then Jonathan went
home, but David remained at Horesh.

her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.

After this, Jesus and
his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time
with them, and baptized. Now John also
was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and
people were coming and being baptized. (This was before John
was put in prison.) An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a
certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John and
said to him, “Rabbi, that
man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone
is going to him.”
To this John replied, “A
person can receive only what is given them from heaven. You yourselves can
testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ The bride belongs to the
bridegroom. The
friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy
when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater;
I must become less.”
The one who comes from
above is above all; the one
who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he
has seen and heard, but no
one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. For the one whom God has
sent speaks the words of God,
for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son
and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the
Son has eternal life, but
whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which
we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we
have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which
was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we
have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our
fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write
this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to
you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to
have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not
live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.
