Israel had been
charged by God with the task of being the light to the nations, but as we know
from Israel’s history they more often than not failed miserably at doing this.
So when Jesus says, “I am the light of the world…” he is essentially saying, “I am the
true Israelite. I can fulfill the role God gave to Israel to be a light to the
rest of the world, and to show the world what God is truly like.” And so Jesus
declares that those who follow him “will never walk in darkness, but will have the
light of life.” Think
about that as you read these passages.

From the Torah
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first
day.
And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the
vault from the water above it. And it was
so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second
day.
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered
to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear
fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed
according to their kinds and trees
bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was
good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third
day.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the
night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give
light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on
the earth, to govern
the day and the night, and to
separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth
day.
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of
the sky.” So God
created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and
that moves about in it, according to
their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in
number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth
day.
And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground,
and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to
their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to
their kinds. And God saw
that it was good.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So God created mankind in his own
image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over
every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of
the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be
yours for food. And to all
the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that
move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth
day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all
their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the
seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Genesis 1:1-2:3
From the Former Prophets
These
are the last words of David:
“The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke
through me;
his word was on my tongue.
The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’
his word was on my tongue.
The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’
“If my house were not right with God,
surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,
arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant me my every desire.
But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,
which are not gathered with the hand.
Whoever touches thorns
uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are burned up where they lie.”
surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,
arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant me my every desire.
But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,
which are not gathered with the hand.
Whoever touches thorns
uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are burned up where they lie.”
2 Samuel 23:1-7
From the Latter Prophets
Nevertheless,
there will be no more gloom for
those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the
land of Naphtali, but in
the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond
the Jordan—
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

From the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;
pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning,
so do not forsake my teaching.
For I too was a son to my father,
still tender, and cherished by my mother.
Then he taught me, and he said to me,
“Take hold of my words with all your heart;
keep my commands, and you will live.
Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will give you a garland to grace your head
and present you with a glorious crown.”
pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning,

Listen, my son, accept what I say,
and the years of your life will be many.
I instruct you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
guard it well, for it is your life.
Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evildoers.
Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way.
For they cannot rest until they do evil;
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
and the years of your life will be many.
I instruct you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.

For they cannot rest until they do evil;
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know what makes them stumble.
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know what makes them stumble.
My son, pay
attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
Keep your mouth free of perversity;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil.
turn your ear to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
Keep your mouth free of perversity;

keep your foot from evil.
Proverbs 4:1-27
From the Late Books
Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
You who are young, be happy while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.
So then, banish anxiety from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.
Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;
but all their songs grow faint;
when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home
and mourners go about the streets.
and mourners go about the streets.
Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:7
From the Gospels
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the
light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the light of life.”
The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own
witness; your testimony is not valid.”
Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my
testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But
you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by
human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my
decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent
me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is
true. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father,
who sent me.”
Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If
you knew me, you would know my Father also.” He spoke these words while
teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were
put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look
for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he
says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You
are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die
in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in
your sins.”
“Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus
replied. “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is
trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
They did not understand that he was telling them about his
Father. So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but
speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me;
he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” Even as
he spoke, many believed in him.
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to
my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the
truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have
never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a
slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son
belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free
indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for
a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling
you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you
have heard from your father.”
John
8:12-38
From the
Epistles
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which
we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we
have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which
was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we
have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our
fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write
this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to
you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to
have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not
live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the
truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If
we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his
word is not in us.
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not
sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus
Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and
not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
We know that we have come to know him if we keep his
commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is
a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word,
love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we
are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old
one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the
message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth
is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true
light is already shining.
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is
still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives
in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But
anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around
in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the
darkness has blinded them.
