When
the highly educated Pharisees speak to the uneducated blind man whom Jesus
healed, they order him to say that Jesus is a sinner. But the blind man says, “Whether
he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I
see!” And
Jesus later says to the Pharisees, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Think about that as
you read these passages.

Moses
answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”
Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”

staff,” he replied.
The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.”
Moses
threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take
it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned
back into a staff in his hand. “This,” said the Lord, “is so that they may
believe that the Lord, the God of their
fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared
to you.”
Then the Lord said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So
Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous—it
had become as white as snow.
“Now put it back into your cloak,” he said. So Moses put his hand
back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.
Then the Lord said, “If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second. But if they do not
believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and
pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.”
Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant,
Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken
to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their
mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind?Is
it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you
what to say.”
But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone
else.”
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your
brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way
to meet you, and he will be glad
to see you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will
teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were
your mouth and as
if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.”

Now the king of Aram was
at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up
my camp in such and such a place.”
The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing that place,
because the Arameans are going down there.” So the king of Israel
checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in
such places.
This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and
demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
“None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but
Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words
you speak in your bedroom.”
“Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men
and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.” Then he senthorses and
chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the
next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no,
my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.
“Don’t be afraid,” the
prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.”
Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked
and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this army with
blindness.” So he
struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.
Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city.
Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them
to Samaria.
After they entered the city, Elisha said, “Lord, open
the eyes of these men so they can see.” Then the Lord opened their eyes and they looked, and
there they were, inside Samaria.
When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “Shall I kill
them, my father? Shall I
kill them?”
“Do not kill them,” he answered. “Would you kill those you have
captured with your own sword or
bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go
back to their master.” So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished
eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. So
the bands from
Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.

As he
went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him,
“Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
“Neither
this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but
this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no
one can work. While I
am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the
saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in
the Pool of Siloam” (this
word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked,
“Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was.
Others
said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he
himself insisted, “I am the man.”
“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on
my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I
could see.”

They brought to the
Pharisees the man who had been blind. Now the day on which
Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. Therefore the Pharisees
also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied,
“and I washed, and now I see.”
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does
not keep the Sabbath.”
But others
asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say
about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man
replied, “He is a prophet.”
They still
did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they
sent for the man’s parents. “Is this your son?” they
asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was
born blind. But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask
him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” His parents said this
because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who
acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. That was why his parents
said, “He is of age; ask him.”
A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give
glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One
thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your
eyes?”
He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to
hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s
disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke
to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he
comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does
not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of
opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not
from God, he
could do nothing.”
To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw
him out.
Jesus heard that they had
thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you
believe in the Son of Man?”
“Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in
him.”
Jesus said, “You
have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
Jesus said, “For
judgment I have come into this

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked,
“What? Are we blind too?”
Jesus said, “If you
were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see,
your guilt remains.

Now you, if you call
yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; if you know his will and
approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced
that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the
foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the
embodiment of knowledge and truth— you, then, who teach
others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you
steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you
commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: “God’s
name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become
as though you had not been circumcised. So then, if those who
are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they
were circumcised? The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law
will condemn you who,
even though you have the written
code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and
physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is
circumcision of the heart, by the
Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other
people, but from God.
