Baptism is a symbol of our resurrection. God brings us out of
death and into new life both physically and spiritually. As you reflect on these
passages, think about how Jesus’ death and resurrection is bringing you from
death to life, both now and in the future.

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.
“The Lord is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior;
the Lord is his name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and his army
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.
The deep waters have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.
Your right hand, Lord,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand, Lord,
shattered the enemy.
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior;
the Lord is his name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and his army

Your right hand, Lord,

“In the greatness of your majesty
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;
it consumed them like stubble.
By the blast of your nostrils
the waters piled up.
The surging waters stood up like a wall;
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy boasted,
‘I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.’
But you blew with your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.
Who among the gods
is like you, Lord?
Who is like you—
majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory,
working wonders?
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;
it consumed them like stubble.

“You stretch out your right hand,
and the earth swallows your enemies.
In your unfailing love you will lead
the people you have redeemed.
In your strength you will guide them
to your holy dwelling.
The nations will hear and tremble;
anguish will grip the people of Philistia.
The chiefs of Edom will be terrified,
the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,
the people of Canaan will melt away;
terror and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone—
until your people pass by, Lord,
until the people you bought pass by.
You will bring them in and plant them
on the mountain of your inheritance—
the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,
the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.
and the earth swallows your enemies.
In your unfailing love you will lead
the people you have redeemed.
In your strength you will guide them
to your holy dwelling.

“The Lord reigns
for ever and ever.”
for ever and ever.”
When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord
brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites
walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel
in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them:
“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”
Exodus 15:1-21
From the Former Prophets
Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from
Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before
crossing over. After three days the officers went throughout the camp, giving orders to the people:
“When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to
move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to
go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two
thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it.”
Joshua
told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”
Joshua
said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the
people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them.
And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will
begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as
I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the
Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’”
Joshua
said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord
your God. This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly
drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and
Jebusites. See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead
of you. Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one
from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing
downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”
So when
the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the
covenant went ahead of them. Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who
carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped
flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a
town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was
completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. The priests who carried the ark of the
covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the
Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed
the crossing on dry ground.
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from
each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests
are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where
you stay tonight.”
So
Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the
Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over
before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the
Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to
the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when
your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the
Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut
off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel
forever.”
So the
Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the
middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with
them to their camp, where they put them down. Joshua set up the twelve stones
that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who
carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.
Now the
priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until
everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done
by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, and as soon as all of them had
crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the
other side while the people watched. The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle,
in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. About forty thousand armed for
battle crossed over before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for
war.
That
day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all
Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had
stood in awe of Moses.
Then
the Lord said to Joshua, “Command the priests carrying
the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.”
So
Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
And the
priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the
waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.
On the
tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at
Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. And Joshua set up at Gilgal the
twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. He said to the Israelites, “In
the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones
mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan
before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what
he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we
had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you
might always fear the Lord your God.”
Joshua 3:1–4:24
From the Latter Prophets
From
inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:
“In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.
I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’
The engulfing waters threatened me,
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.
I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’
The engulfing waters threatened me,
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.
“When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.
I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.
“Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”
turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”
And the Lord commanded the fish, and it
vomited Jonah onto dry land.
Jonah 2:1-10
From the Books of Wisdom and Poetry
You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:1-24
From the Late Books
“At that time
Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will
arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until
then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the
book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth
will awake: some to
everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like
the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
Daniel 12:1-4
From the Gospels
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the
wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the
prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”
John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a
leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild
honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region
of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in
the Jordan River.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to
where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with
repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham
as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up
children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and
every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into
the fire.
“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me
comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing
fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat
into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by
John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you,
and do you come to me?”
Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do
this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At
that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of
God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from
heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased.”
Matthew
3:1-17
From
the Epistles
Finally,
all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the
contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a
blessing. For,
“Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
and their lips from deceitful speech.
They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
and their lips from deceitful speech.
They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer
for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do
not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always
be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with
gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak
maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their
slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation
to the imprisoned spirits—to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited
patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight
in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the
removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with
angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
