Christ calls us to focus
our attention on him and to live in the fullness of his purity. By his grace we
may then see what he sees as we allow him to burn away all things within us
that are anti-Christ. And as he purifies us, we become aware of more than ourselves
and we come alongside others and help them in their suffering. Think about that
as you read these passages.

From the Torah
Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an
altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your
brother Esau.”
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him,
“Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to
Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my
distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the
foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the
oak at Shechem. Then
they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around
them so that no one pursued them.
Jacob
and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land
of Canaan. There he built an altar, and he called the place El
Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his
brother.
Now
Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.
After
Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and
blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be
called Jacob; your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.
And God
said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in
number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be
among your descendants. The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I
will give this land to your descendants after you.” Then God went up from him at the place where he had
talked with him.
Jacob
set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a
drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. Jacob called the place where
God had talked with him Bethel.
Genesis 35:1-15
From the Former Prophets
“He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.
He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.
he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.
He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.
“The Lord has dealt with me according to my
righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
All his laws are before me;
I have not turned away from his decrees.
I have been blameless before him
and have kept myself from sin.
The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness in his sight.
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
All his laws are before me;

“To the faithful you show yourself
faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
You save the humble,
but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.
You, Lord, are my lamp;
the Lord turns my darkness into light.
With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
You save the humble,

“As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength
and keeps my way secure.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle;
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You make your saving help my shield;
your help has made me great.
You provide a broad path for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.

“Then I will purify the lips of the
peoples,
that all of them may call on the name of the Lord
and serve him shoulder to shoulder.
From beyond the rivers of Cush
my worshipers, my scattered people,
will bring me offerings.
On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame
for all the wrongs you have done to me,
because I will remove from you
your arrogant boasters.
Never again will you be haughty
on my holy hill.
But I will leave within you
the meek and humble.
The remnant of Israel
will trust in the name of the Lord.
They will do no wrong;
they will tell no lies.
A deceitful tongue
will not be found in their mouths.
They will eat and lie down
and no one will make them afraid.”

Sing, Daughter Zion;
shout aloud, Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,

The Lord has taken away your punishment,

Zephaniah 3:9-20
From the Books of Wisdom
and Poetry
A psalm of Asaph.
Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.
to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are free from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
they clothe themselves with violence.
From their callous hearts comes iniquity;
their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;
with arrogance they threaten oppression.
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.
Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.
They say, “How would God know?
Does the Most High know anything?”
their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are free from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
they clothe themselves with violence.
From their callous hearts comes iniquity;
their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;
with arrogance they threaten oppression.
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.
Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.
They say, “How would God know?
Does the Most High know anything?”
This is what the wicked are like—
always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
and have washed my hands in innocence.
All day long I have been afflicted,
and every morning brings new punishments.
and have washed my hands in innocence.
All day long I have been afflicted,
and every morning brings new punishments.
If I had spoken out like that,
I would have betrayed your children.
When I tried to understand all this,
it troubled me deeply
till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny.
I would have betrayed your children.
When I tried to understand all this,
it troubled me deeply
till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny.
Surely you place them on slippery ground;
you cast them down to ruin.
How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors!
They are like a dream when one awakes;
when you arise, Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.
you cast them down to ruin.
How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors!
They are like a dream when one awakes;
when you arise, Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.
When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.
and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
Psalm
73:1-24
From
the Late Books
On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the
people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever
be admitted into the assembly of God, because they had not met the
Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the
curse into a blessing.) When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who
were of foreign descent.
Before
this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God. He was
closely associated with Tobiah, and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store
the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and olive
oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the
contributions for the priests.
But
while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second
year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I
asked his permission and
came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the
house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods
out of the room. I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them
the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.
I also
learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and
musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields. So I rebuked the officials and
asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and
stationed them at their posts.
All
Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms. I put Shelemiah the priest,
Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and
made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they
were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the
supplies to their fellow Levites.
Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully
done for the house of my God and its services.
In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the
Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine,
grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into
Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. People
from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of
merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. I rebuked the nobles of Judah
and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the
Sabbath day? Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought
all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more
wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”
When
evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut
and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at
the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. Once or twice the merchants and
sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. But I warned them and said,
“Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest
you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. Then I commanded the Levites to
purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day
holy.
Remember me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your
great love.
Nehemiah
13:1-22
From the Gospels
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and
sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say
all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in
heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew
5:1-12
From
the Epistles
The end
of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other
deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without
grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve
others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should
do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should
do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may
be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and
ever. Amen.
