Living on Mission, Knowing Who’s Who

Living on Mission, Knowing Who’s Who

John 1:19-34

Our passage this week begins with people questioning John the Baptist. They wanted to know who he really was. They seemed to suspect that he was the Messiah. Are you the Messiah? Elijah? The prophet? Nope. John knew who he was. He was sent by God to baptize people and to prepare the way for the Messiah. He was the one pointing everyone to the Lord. He was not puffed up with pride when people thought he was greater than he was because he knew where he stood in the big picture. He was not confused about his purpose or calling or reason for being on the earth.

John also knew who Jesus was. He knew. God told him. Wait…God told him? Yes! (I love this!) John said, “I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.” (John 1:33-34) No confusion here. He knew what God said and he spread the news all over the place.

It’s important when living missionally to know who we are and who He is. When we understand the unsurpassed greatness of our Lord, we will direct all praise to Him. When we see the depth and breadth of His unconditional love for us, we will be compelled to spread the message of His love, goodness, and mercy.

Let’s practice Living on Mission and know, without any doubt, who we are and who He is.
