“Do whatever he tells you.” These are the words of Jesus’ mother
Mary right before Jesus turns the water into wine. But Jesus didn’t just wave
his hand and say some magic word. The miracle was founded upon the obedient
actions of those participating in the wedding. Faith in a Messiah who thought
that this wedding and these people were worth his time and energy. Think about
that as you read these passages.

From
the Torah
Then
Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in
the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink
its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against
Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
Then
Moses cried out to the Lord, and
the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He
threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.
There
the Lord issued a ruling and instruction
for them and put them to the test. He said, “If you listen
carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right
in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of
the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”
Then
they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and
they camped there near the water.
Exodus 15:22-27
From the Former Prophets
The
people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated,
as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.”
“Bring
me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.
Then he
went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This
is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this
water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the
word Elisha had spoken.

From the Latter Prophets
The word of the Lord came to me: “Go and proclaim in the hearing
of Jerusalem:
“This is what the Lord says:
“‘I remember the devotion of your
youth,
how as a bride you loved me
and followed me through the wilderness,
through a land not sown.
Israel was holy to the Lord,
the firstfruits of his harvest;
all who devoured her were held guilty,
and disaster overtook them,’”
declares the Lord.

and followed me through the wilderness,
through a land not sown.
Israel was holy to the Lord,
the firstfruits of his harvest;
all who devoured her were held guilty,
and disaster overtook them,’”
declares the Lord.
Hear the word of the Lord, you descendants of Jacob,
all you clans of Israel.
all you clans of Israel.
This is what the Lord says:
“What fault did your ancestors find
in me,
that they strayed so far from me?
They followed worthless idols
and became worthless themselves.
They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord,
who brought us up out of Egypt
and led us through the barren wilderness,
through a land of deserts and ravines,
a land of drought and utter darkness,
a land where no one travels and no one lives?’
I brought you into a fertile land
to eat its fruit and rich produce.
But you came and defiled my land
and made my inheritance detestable.
The priests did not ask,
‘Where is the Lord?’
Those who deal with the law did not know me;
the leaders rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by Baal,
following worthless idols.
that they strayed so far from me?
They followed worthless idols

“Therefore I bring charges against you again,”
declares the Lord.
“And I will bring charges against your children’s children.
Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus and look,
send to Kedar and observe closely;
see if there has ever been anything like this:
Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet they are not gods at all.)
But my people have exchanged their glorious God
for worthless idols.
Be appalled at this, you heavens,
and shudder with great horror,”

“My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth?
Why then has he become plunder?
Lions have roared;
they have growled at him.
They have laid waste his land;
his towns are burned and deserted.
Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes
have cracked your skull.
Have you not brought this on yourselves
by forsaking the Lord your God
when he led you in the way?
Now why go to Egypt
to drink water from the Nile?
And why go to Assyria
to drink water from the Euphrates?
Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding will rebuke you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter it is for you
when you forsake the Lord your God
and have no awe of me,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

“Long ago you broke off your yoke
and tore off your bonds;
you said, ‘I will not serve you!’
Indeed, on every high hill
and under every spreading tree
you lay down as a prostitute.
I had planted you like a choice vine
of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
into a corrupt, wild vine?
Although you wash yourself with soap
and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.

“How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;
I have not run after the Baals’?
See how you behaved in the valley;
consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
running here and there,
a wild donkey accustomed to the desert,
sniffing the wind in her craving—
in her heat who can restrain her?
Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at mating time they will find her.
Do not run until your feet are bare
and your throat is dry.
But you said, ‘It’s no use!
I love foreign gods,
and I must go after them.’
I have not run after the Baals’?

“As a thief is disgraced when he is caught,
so the people of Israel are disgraced—
they, their kings and their officials,
their priests and their prophets.
They say to wood, ‘You are my father,’
and to stone, ‘You gave me birth.’
They have turned their backs to me
and not their faces;
yet when they are in trouble, they say,
‘Come and save us!’
Where then are the gods you made for yourselves?
Let them come if they can save you
when you are in trouble!
For you, Judah, have as many gods
as you have towns.

“In vain I punished your people;
they did not respond to correction.
Your sword has devoured your prophets
like a ravenous lion.
they did not respond to correction.
Your sword has devoured your prophets

“You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord:
“Have I been a desert to Israel
or a land of great darkness?
Why do my people say, ‘We are free to roam;
we will come to you no more’?
Does a young woman forget her jewelry,
a bride her wedding ornaments?
Yet my people have forgotten me,
days without number.
How skilled you are at pursuing love!
Even the worst of women can learn from your ways.
On your clothes is found
the lifeblood of the innocent poor,
though you did not catch them breaking in.
Yet in spite of all this
you say, ‘I am innocent;
he is not angry with me.’
But I will pass judgment on you
because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’
Why do you go about so much,
changing your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt
as you were by Assyria.
You will also leave that place
with your hands on your head,
for the Lord has rejected those you trust;
you will not be helped by them.

To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. Amaskil. A wedding
song.
My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,
since God has blessed you forever.
and your lips have been anointed with grace,
since God has blessed you forever.
Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one;
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.
In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.
Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.
In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.
Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.
All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
from palaces adorned with ivory
the music of the strings makes you glad.
Daughters of kings are among your honored women;
at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.
All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
from palaces adorned with ivory
the music of the strings makes you glad.
Daughters of kings are among your honored women;
at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention:
Forget your people and your father’s house.
Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.
The city of Tyre will come with a gift,
people of wealth will seek your favor.
All glorious is the princess within her chamber;
her gown is interwoven with gold.
In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
her virgin companions follow her—
those brought to be with her.
Led in with joy and gladness,
they enter the palace of the king.
Forget your people and your father’s house.
Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.
The city of Tyre will come with a gift,
people of wealth will seek your favor.
All glorious is the princess within her chamber;

In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
her virgin companions follow her—
those brought to be with her.
Led in with joy and gladness,
they enter the palace of the king.
Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you will make them princes throughout the land.
you will make them princes throughout the land.
I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;
therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.
therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

From
the Late Books
All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
as they made their rounds in the city.
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go
till I had brought him to my mother’s house,
to the room of the one who conceived me.
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go
till I had brought him to my mother’s house,
to the room of the one who conceived me.
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you

Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.

Look! It is Solomon’s carriage,
escorted by sixty warriors,
the noblest of Israel,
all of them wearing the sword,
all experienced in battle,
each with his sword at his side,
prepared for the terrors of the night.

he made it of wood from Lebanon.
Its posts he made of silver,
its base of gold.
Its seat was upholstered with purple,
its interior inlaid with love.

Daughters of Jerusalem, come out,
and look, you daughters of Zion.
Look on King Solomon wearing a crown,
the crown with which his mother crowned him
on the day of his wedding,
the day his heart rejoiced.
and look, you daughters of Zion.
Look on King Solomon wearing a crown,
the crown with which his mother crowned him

Song
of Songs 3:1-11
From the Gospels
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had
also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’
mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
His
mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Nearby
stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to
thirty gallons.
Jesus
said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so
they filled them to the brim.
Then he
told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They
did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been
turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who
had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out
the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too
much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
What
Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his
glory; and his disciples believed in him.
After
this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
John
2:1-12
From
the Epistles/Revelation
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the
first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down
out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her
husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s
dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and
God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from
their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has
passed away.”
He who
was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”Then he said, “Write this down,
for these words are trustworthy and true.”
He said
to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To
the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of
life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I
will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the
unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice
magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery
lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
One of
the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I
will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high,
and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like
that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with
twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the
names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three
on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve
foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
The
angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city,
its gates and its walls. The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He
measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high
as it is long. The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144
cubits thick. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as
pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind
of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third
agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the
eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and
the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single
pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
I did
not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun
or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will
walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into
it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night
there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter
it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are
written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from
the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side
of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every
month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and
his servants will serve him. They
will see his face, and his
name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the
sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
