Living on Mission, Shining His Light and Living as Jesus Did
John
1:1-18 (Please take a couple of minutes to read this – it’s SO good!!)
The world is longing to know about
God. We’ve all wondered, “What is God like?” The opening passage of the Gospel
of John speaks clearly to us: He’s like Jesus. Just like Jesus. Jesus is the
visible image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15) All of our questions
about God are answered in Jesus, so we need to take a good long look at Him
–how He lived, what He did, how He treated people, what was important to Him,
and what He loved.
These beginning verses of the
Gospel of John have some key ideas for us as we are learning to live on
mission. Let’s look briefly at a couple of things that stand out:
John the Baptist was not the light, but a witness to tell
the world about the light. We also do
this when we live missionally. We don’t have any light of our own. No good
works we do in the world have lasting meaning or the ability to change lives. We
are the light of the world because we reflect the light of Jesus in the
darkness.
Jesus became flesh and came to live among us. The Incarnation teaches us about our posture and our
approach to the world and our neighborhood. As believers and followers of
Jesus, we have been sent to live among people who don’t know Him yet. They
don’t know what He is like, so we go into the community with Jesus living
through us. In our neighborhood. In our family. In our workplace. We allow Him
to love people, to care for people, and to serve them through us. We become actively
involved members of the community. We live as He did in the world:
sacrificially, with a purpose, and out of a heart of love. We live on mission.
Let’s practice Living on
Mission, shining the light of Jesus and living as He did in the world.
